Attention family!
Families are sometimes small, sometimes huge. They are sometimes scattered all over the world or they live in a single city. The classic family consists of father, mother and children. But also single people with their child are a family. And when two women or two men raise a child, they are also called a family. There are foster families, multigenerational families and families who came from other countries and now live with us…
The exhibition “Attention Family” is about questions like: What is family anyway? What does the family to which we belong mean to us? What does family mean today? How do we live? How do others live? How do we want to live together in the future? Families all over Germany have answered these questions and helped to shape the exhibition with their diverse models of life, suggestions and experiences.
Many offers to participate invite visitors to take part in an unusual search for clues. Together with their families, children and young people can encounter the most diverse forms of living together in a huge labyrinth. Walk-in family stories, which can be explored like discovery travellers, offer exciting experiences, insights and outlooks as well as impulses for discussions on the subject of family, community, love and responsibility.
Whether it’s a playroom “Only for boys” and “Only for girls”, a family court where you have to decide in disputes or even talking bedrooms ̶ in the lovingly and detailed designed rooms the diversity of today’s family can be experienced. Young and old visitors alike throw themselves through the daily routine of a family.
Those who dare and win the nappy-changing course can try out the “stress machine” or start the washing machine of the extended family. Those who want, can get married in the wedding room or look for families in other countries on the globe. But you can also hide in the “nest” and experience how families of animals take care of their children.
Whether the patchwork family with three children, a father in parental leave, the twins with two mothers, the deaf parents with the hearing girl, the young mother who still goes to school or the grandparents who look after her grandchild every day ̶ family is what people make of it. Special topics, such as children’s rights, international families or violence in the family provide content for controversy. “Attention Family” shows that family is an adventure, that family is something alive, something strong and at the same time something vulnerable. This can be experienced while walking through the exhibition!
