The theme of love preoccupied the sculptor, painter, and author Ernst Barlach (1870–1938) throughout his life – both privately and in his sculptural and graphic works. For him, love as a fundamental human emotion was far more than the relationship of a conventional couple, as the Edwin Scharff Museum shows in a new special exhibition.
Themes such as temptation, longing, and unconditional love are found in his work, as well as works depicting scenes of maternal love or love for hire. The intimate affection of a couple in love or the alluring calls of the sirens are given as much space as the mourning for a loved one.
The exhibition presents Ernst Barlach as a sensitive observer of human emotions. Selected art works, accompanied by poetic texts, show the artist’s multifaceted exploration of love in all its facets. The show is complemented by works from the Edwin Scharff Collection.
